ICANN also know as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is responsible for managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses for the Internet. Now that ICANN has given initial approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the Top Level Domain set up.
According to a BBC News article members of the ICANN board are uncomfortable with the addition of .xxx as a new TLD for the Internet.
Some board members said they were personally "uncomfortable" with the decision to approve .xxx but could not block it because ICM had followed Icann's rules for setting up a new top-level domain.

For me this seems such an obvious decision to create an area intended for adult material. The rules for other TLDs and IDNs could then be adjust to require sites catering to adult sexual content to operate only on the .xxx TLD.
I realise that this seems very draconian and narrow minded but that simply is not true. I have no issue with adult content. I do however feel that it would be the mature and obvious choice to make. Taking this action would aid the filtering of adult material for parental controls as only one TLD would need to be blacklisted to block adult material on your own computer.
I think that this is a fair and reasonable solution to addressing adult content on the Internet.
