Apple Sells Three Million iPads

June 22nd 2010

My comments on Apple selling Three Million iPads in less than 80 days since its launch on 3rd April and the future of Apple TV.

On the 22nd June Apple announced that they have sold three million iPads since it's launch in April 80 days ago. This really does not surprise me as when I walk through Holborn Underground Station in London I am bombarded with advertisements for the magical tablet. The Apple press release quotes Steve Jobs, Apple CEO as saying:

“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

I am interested though to know the ratio of Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G devices. I would imagine that especially in the UK people who have purchased the iPad are opting for the 16GB Wi-Fi variant at £429. At £429 I feel that the device is at the upper most price bracket for the majority of consumers.

Capacity Wi-Fi Wi-Fi + 3G
16GB £429.00 £529.00
32GB £499.00 £599.00
64GB £599.00 £699.00

Apple also took the opportunity to also report that Developers have created over 11,000 apps for iPad and almost all of the more than 225,000 apps on the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

I feel increasingly that the recently renamed iOS operating system while become the corner stone of Apple's business as the platform for selling apps, books, films, music and television. I am coming to the opinion that the way to reinvigorate the hobby know as Apple TV is to bundle or offer a reduced price iPod touch for use as the primary human interface device for Apple TV.

Recent updates to the iOS to include the pairing of bluetooth keyboards could be used as secondary Apple TV input devices for composing emails and browsing the Internet on your television. Apple TV could also be combined with the multi-touch Magic Mouse. I think this an extremely interesting opportunity and possibility when you consider the considerable investment in the A4 processor used in both iPad and iPhone 4 and the strength of the 236,000 strong application ecosystem.

I do believe this is the obvious next extension to iOS family based upon the success Apple had experienced with the iPad and distributing apps, books, films, music and television.
