2010 Election: 1 - Television Debates

April 23rd 2010

I believe television debates have more in common with a television talent show than an election campaign.

I have now watch two of the three Leader Debates for the 2010 General Election here in the United Kingdom I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the format. I find the format limits the quality of the debate it deserves. The programmes only trivialises the election process. I believe that now it has more in common with a television talent show than a new credible component to an election.

The format we have all witnessed invites the viewer to select the next Prime Minister based upon their ability to perform in front of a live television audience and cameras for millions of viewers. This 'merican import does not enhance our democracy. Instead I feel it devaluing the highest Office of State and responsibility it requires.

I personally would prefer to see that debate run in a similar format to the Question Time on the BBC. This way it would afford the electorate the opportunity to clap in agreement. By requiring the studio audience to remain silent during the process apart from the posing of questions is extremely disrespectful. To me this is the most egregious form of 'shut up slave!'.

Ideally I would like to see a Town Hall style debate where the public can ask the candidate question which are unplanned and unfiltered. I think it important the the Leaders of the three main parties are stretched. Asked question which not only challenge them but require them to answer question of relevance to our Nation and not the agendas of the three television network broadcasting the debates. This would then reaffirm my belief that they work for us.

Whether the responce from the electorate come the 8th May is clear or undecided the man who leads the Nations must be strong in character and flexible. Adjusting their position as events unfold and lessons are learned.
