Our online actions and habits are tracked and recorded allowing highly specific targeted Internet advertisements and product recommendations on sites such as Amazon. This for the proprietor of consumer services is the holy grail of targeted inexpensive personal selling.

Ubuntu Tips: 12 - Google Chrome

Google Chrome is being developed around three principles; Speed, Simplicity and Style. For those reasons and the Google search baked into the address bar it has become my browser of choice across Windows, Macintosh and Linux. I have found that Firefox has increasingly become as bloated as Internet Explorer and that is why I use Google Chrome.

Ubuntu Tips: 11 - DVD playback

Most commercial DVDs are encrypted with CSS (the Content Scrambling System), which attempts to restrict the software that can play a DVD. By installing libdvdcss a free software library for unscrambling DVDs encrypted with the CSS you can watch your library of films on your Ubuntu computer. This is true for all other Linux distributions. Ubuntu is my preferred variant.

The Virtual Revolution: 2 - Enemy of the State?

On Saturday the 6th of February Enemy of the State the second episode of The Virtual Revolution was aired on BBC Two. The episode starts with recounting how Twitter became a critical component in Iranian riots in July 2009. This included an interview with @oxfordgirl on how she resent Twitter messages about the ongoing riots. This was a powerful and interesting documentary which looks at both the power of the Internet and how it is being increasingly policed by governments across the globe.
